The Rise of Esha: A Social Media Influencer’s Journey

The idea of starting on such platforms originated from a user by the name Rajeshwari who chose to use the pseudonym Esha on TikTok and Instagram. Having new pictures on a regular basis she rapidly accumulated thousands of fans who was thrilled by her transformation, workout videos and diet plans. Thus, people can see that Esha’s account is sincere, which contributed to the creation of nearly 200,000 followers on TikTok and over 60,000 in Instagram.

However, Esha went further and engaged into other related area of fitness content. She also did makeup product review, giving her fans the real deal on what they are likely to benefit or harm from. This was because she was very real in her presentation and this made people run to her whenever they needed information. Thus, it could be seen that Esha’s life seemed well-supported by parents, elder sister, and boyfriend. However, the larger she grew influenced, the difficulties which she encountered are also escalated.

The Incident at Murugan Temple and Its Aftermath

Esha faced controversy in May 2024, she saw a video on YouTube by Abdellatif, a Moroccan tourist influencer. Abdellatif had visited the Murugan temple in Malaysia whereas he had recited verses from the Quran and Esha, an activist, considered it as being disrespectful to the temple’s religious attributes. When the police did not arrest them she lodged a complaint against them and failed inaction, she organized a protest along with 20 other social activists.

This attracted the attention of the social sites users, and within no time Esha was backed by the Tamil community within Malaysia. People assembled at the Murugan temple and performed Kandha Sashti Kavasam a prayer form for protest. The response on the social media was equally swift and many people denounced Abdellatif for his actions. One evening Abdellatif posted a video on his socials which sparked outrage and backlash He proceeded to delete the video and post an apology, which brought what seemed to end the controversy. But this event was a starting point in the mental degradation of Esha’s character.

The Battle with Online Harassment

This happened in August, 2023 when Esha featured a beauty product from Glory Cosmetics and developed a skin allergy to the product. Her review of the product made the Ministry of Health in Malaysia to ban the product making her followers to applaud her efforts. However it also turned her into a target Fig: Friedan and Shaw 153]. This decision of the board was followed by organized trolling, and those toughs are thought to be connected with the company.

These trolls, most of whom operate fake accounts, spammed Esha’s TikTok videos with insulting comments. They tried to insist, but she turned all the accounts they used to harass her and despite her attempt to ban them they just created other accounts to annoy her again. Some of the worst perpetrators of harassment included Shalini Periyasamy, Dhanya Nivasini and the Dulal brothers. They began threatening her physically, and especially on the online live broadcasts of her programmes, they began referring to her in the worst of language. In June 2024, they took further aggression in the social media by threatening her life in TikTok.

Despite this, Esha had received some serious personal blows and this video left her rather rattled. She actually complained to the police of the harassment and consulted David Marshall, the leader of Malaysia Ikea Rights Party. However, the advice she received failed her on how to deal with the continuous harassment for hers. The constant torture drove her mad and consequently she committed suicide on July 5, 2024.

The Aftermath and the Call for Justice

Esha’s death remained a rude shock to the people and the entire country of Malaysia. She was a young woman, in her early 30s, and often left on her own with two young daughters, her 62-year-old father and a temple caretaker said he could not understand why she committed suicide. It was duly taken up as a national discourse after a TikToker posted a video on the factors that led to Esha’s suicide.

There has been a lot of controversy concerning the murder and on 7 July 2024,the Communication Minister of Malaysia Fahmi Fadzil paid a visit to Esha’s funerals expressing his condolences and vowed to deal with the perpetrators to the fullest. He disclosed intentions of enacting fresh legislation to counter the incidence of fake ID and that, people involved in such offenses should face justice. This was accompanied by the arrest of a 35-year-old woman linked to the case on the July 8, and was charged under different sections of the law.
