The Shocking Murder Case of Maya Gogoi: A Tale of Possession and Tragedy

It was November 26, 2024, three months ago, in a three-star hotel called Royal Living in Indiranagar, Bangalore. The time was nearing 12:30 p.m., and the hotel receptionist was trying to call someone through the telephone. Since no one answered, he hung up and opened a file of the people who had booked their stay. He called another number, but it was switched off. Frustrated, he took a deep breath and kept the phone receiver down. Suddenly, he heard the sound of someone running inside the hotel.

Shocked, he turned to see a room boy running in fear. The boy stopped in front of him, breathless, and began to explain something that left the receptionist stunned. Immediately, the receptionist rushed inside the hotel, where a foul stench filled the air. Covering his face with a kerchief, he approached an already-opened room. His heartbeat was so loud it could be heard by anyone nearby.

As he stepped inside, he froze in shock. On the bed lay the decomposed body of a young woman, with dried blood stains on her neck, stomach, and chest. Terrified, he ran out of the room and immediately called the police.

Who was the girl? What happened to her? Who killed her? This case shocked all of Karnataka and is one that this generation must know about. Let’s decode the chilling story of Maya Gogoi.

The Discovery of the Crime

The police arrived at the hotel and got the body of the girl taken for autopsy. The forensic experts began collecting evidence, and they found a knife soaked in blood and a nylon wire. They also found a purse and a cell phone. There was an Aadhar card in the purse, and it revealed the victim’s identity: Maya Gogoi, an Assamese girl aged 19.

When the police activated the mobile phone, they noticed a few missed calls from her sister. When they contacted her, she wept on hearing about Maya’s death. She told them that Maya had moved to Bangalore to pursue her dream of getting a job in a city.

Maya’s Journey to Bangalore

Maya, a YouTube vlogger from Assam, had dreams of settling in a metropolitan city like Mumbai or Bangalore. Her elder sister, who was already working in Bangalore, helped her secure a job at a company providing mental health counseling to students. Maya stayed with her sister, and everything seemed fine until November 23.

That morning, Maya told her sister she was attending a seminar in Mysore and left home. However, from November 24 onwards, Maya only communicated via WhatsApp messages, avoiding calls. When her sister called, Maya would hang up, claiming she was in a seminar hall.

The Hotel Receptionist’s Account

The hotel receptionist provided crucial information. A boy named Aarav, aged 21, had booked a room with Maya on November 23 at around 12:30 p.m. Aarav had initially booked the room for a day but had it extended for two additional days. There was no response when the receptionist called the room landline and Aarav’s cell phone number.

Soon after, one of the room boys complained about a foul smell coming from the room. Upon entering, he discovered Maya’s lifeless body and immediately informed the receptionist.

The Investigation Unfolds

The police obtained Aarav’s Aadhar card and mobile number from the hotel records. They discovered he was from Kannur, Kerala, and contacted the Kerala police to check his house. Meanwhile, Aarav’s phone was switched off.

CCTV footage revealed that Aarav had left the hotel around 8:30 a.m. on November 26 and took a call taxi to Bangalore railway station. However, the police couldn’t trace his movements further.

Over the next few days, Aarav’s phone was briefly switched on in Raichur, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Just as the police prepared to head to Uttar Pradesh, Aarav surrendered to the Bangalore police.

Aarav’s Confession

Aarav confessed to the crime, revealing a chilling story. After completing his degree in Kerala, he moved to Bangalore for work. He met Maya through a dating app, and they soon fell in love. However, their relationship turned toxic when Aarav became possessive.

He couldn’t stand Maya talking to other boys, even casually. Despite her explanations, Aarav’s suspicions grew, leading to constant arguments. When Maya stopped talking to him, Aarav’s anger escalated.

He lured Maya back by apologizing and convincing her to spend a day with him at the hotel. Unbeknownst to Maya, Aarav had already planned her murder. He had bought a nylon rope and a knife, intending to strangle or stab her.

On November 23, after a heated argument, Aarav brutally attacked Maya, stabbing her multiple times. He stayed in the room with her decomposing body for three days, avoiding suspicion by claiming they would eat outside.

When the smell became unbearable, Aarav fled to Uttar Pradesh but eventually surrendered to the police.

Lessons from the Tragedy

This is a classic example of the dangers of venturing into relationships without fully knowing the other person. Aarav’s possessiveness and Maya’s inability to see the warning signs led to a disastrous end.

It’s advisable to take one’s time to know the character of a person before venturing into a relationship. Either a boy or a girl, suspicion and possessiveness can have disastrous consequences.

Prevention is always better than cure. Be cautious, alert, and keep away from things that would endanger your life.
